Book Review : The Testing

Hey guys! Today I’m writing about The Testing. If you haven’t read my previous book review, read it here.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Joelle Charbonneau is an author known for The Testing Trilogy and other Young Adult mysteries.

BOOK SUMMARY:

  • The Testing is from Malencia(Cia) Vale’s point of view. This book has a lot of action and humor. This book takes place in The United Commonwealth. The book revolves around the main character, 16 year old Cia, in a dystopian wasteland future, their civilization of survivors (of a global war and environmental conditions) has divided into 18 colonies. Every year, the United Commonwealth invites top graduates to study in the University and then become a leader of the United Commonwealth. But there is a catch. To become a leader you must pass The Testing. It tests to see if you have the perfect combination of knowledge, practical skills, and intelligence. It tests you to see if you have what it takes to lead others. Only people who pass go to the University. The first section tests how well you are at English, Mathematics, History, Science, and Problem Solving. The second section is a hands-on exam that will let you display your ability to transfer intellectual knowledge into practical use. The third section will test your ability to work in teams and the ability to assess your teammates’ strengths and weaknesses. The fourth section will test your decision making and leadership skills. If you get high grades in all four sections, you will have an interview with the selection committee. This helps them find out about your personality and psychological evaluation. That helps them determine who will go to the University. Cia is very excited when she is picked to go to The Testing. But then her father tells her a secret that changes everything. Cia and her friend, Tomas, team up. Tomas seems to care about her more every deadly day of The Testing. There are 108 students that are assembled to be tested. But only 20 of them will go to the University. The students who don’t make it through fail. And failing means dying 😑😨😱☠️.

MY THOUGHTS:

This book is great for people who like Divergent and/or the Hunger Games. Tomas has the devotion of Peeta and the secrets of Four. The action builds up relatively fast but well paced and maintains a good sense of mystery and fear that pulls readers in. The suspense just keeps growing and growing, there’s not much of a stop and drop to it until the end, but even then there’s a cliffhanger that makes the audience hyper for more. Although some parts were easy to read, The plot twists are really surprising, many people didn’t see it coming(or maybe just people who have read The Hunger Games and The Fifth Wave saw it coming ). I’m definitely excited to read the next book and see what happens.

WARNING! Do NOT read if you don’t want spoilers!

I was surprised when we found out that there were cameras everywhere. I was really sad when Cia found Ryme dead in their room. The pressure can’t be that intense that she hanged herself. I was really mad that there was a speaker on the back of each identification bracelet because that meant that people could hear everything Cia said. I recommend it to everyone who likes The Hunger Games.

IS THERE A SEQUEL?

Yes, there is a sequel. I listed them below. I even put their summaries.  I hope you enjoy these books!

  • Independent Study

In Independent Study, Cia is a freshman at the University in Tosu City with her boyfriend, Tomas. Though the government has tried to erase her memory of the brutal horrors of The Testing, Cia remembers.

  • Graduation Day

Gifted student and Testing survivor Cia Vale vows to fight. She wants to put an end to the Testing, but she can’t do it alone. Cia must risk the lives of those she loves–and gamble on the loyalty of her dangerous classmates.
