Hello, lovely readers! I’m back with the third book in the Inheritance Game series! It’s the last one right now, but The Grandest Game comes out July 30, this year. I cannot wait for it! But let’s get started with The Final Gambit. To sum this book up: Secrets upon Secrets. Riddles upon Riddles. In this game, there are hearts and lives at stake—and there is nothing more Hawthorne than winning. Super suspenseful, right? Well this book is super suspenseful.
To inherit billions, all Avery Kylie Grambs has to do is survive a few more weeks living in Hawthorne House. The paparazzi are dogging her every step. Financial pressures are building. Danger is a fact of life. And the only thing getting Avery through it all is the Hawthorne brothers. Her life is intertwined with theirs. She knows their secrets and they know hers.
But as the clock ticks down to the moment when Avery will become the richest teenager on the planet, trouble arrives in the form of a visitor who needs her help—and whose presence in Hawthorne House could change everything. It soon becomes clear that there is one last puzzle to solve, and Avery and the Hawthorne brothers are drawn into a dangerous game against an unknown and powerful player.
Spoilers!!!
AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! She chose Jameson! I would say I’m happy, and I am, but…at the same time I’m a bit sad that Avery didn’t go with Grayson. Allow me to explain.
I’m 100% one of those people who falls for the dark haired, sarcastic love-interest. I love Percy Jackson. I love Grayson Hawthorne. (We would probably all be best buds if they were real.) But sometimes the brooding, blonde guy just finds his way into my heart. Grayson Hawthorne did. I hated him from the minute he stepped into the principal’s office in the first book. He was the typical guy who thinks he knows everything. But, then when he started showing his soft, sweet, vulnerable side, I started loving him. He was left broken after Emily died. Jameson had Avery to help him through it. Grayson needed someone to be there for him. Now, Avery is that someone. She’s helping him get past Emily. Then, stupid Eve came into the scene. She looks exactly like Emily. And when Grayson saw her, he thought he was going crazy and hallucinating. And you know what he said? He told Avery to get away because he’s not safe to be around. He cares about Avery so much.
I’ll get to Eve in a minute. Also, I loved the Grayson and Avery scene at the end. I’ll copy the quote below:
“You hated the idea of me.”
“But not you. Never you.” Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Where do you get these lines from?
“I wanted Eve to be different,” Grayson told me. “I wanted her to be
you.”
“Don’t say that,” I whispered.
He looked at me one last time. “There are so many things that I will
never say.” I would say this quote tug at my heart strings but it actually ripped them out.
And also:
“Promise me you won’t leave again,” I told Grayson. “You can go back to
Harvard. You can go wherever you want, do whatever you want—just
promise me that you won’t shut us out again.” I lifted my hand to my
Hawthorne pin. I knew he had one of his own. I knew that, but I took mine
off and pinned it on him anyway. “Est unus ex nobis. You said that to
Jameson once, do you remember? She is one of us. Well, it goes both ways,
Gray.”
Now, Let’s talk about the characters (all but the bad guys. They’ll have a section of their own):
I loved all of the characters! Every character, I kid you not, from The Hawthorne Brother to Avery to Max to Thea and Rebecca to Libby, Alisa, and Zara and EVEN Oren!
Now the bad guys:
I HATE EVE!!! I hated her from the beginning! She is such a two-faced snake. She literally handed over her father to Vincent Blake. I can’t even—UGH! I cannot believe she manipulated Grayson. But she was so arrogant in the beginning. She didn’t care about Grayson or anyone at all. And just to get all five seals, which meant she would get all of Blake’s money when he died. How could she be so cruel? She used Grayson. And then just tossed him aside when he refused to help. She tried to convince him that Avery is useless.
“You owe Avery nothing.”
Grayson’s eyes met mine. “I owe her more than she realizes”
I love how Xander got to meet his dad. Though I may love Grayson and Jameson, Xander’s my favorite. Nash is fourth only because we didn’t see much of him but I still loved how he’s so protective of Libby.
[Xander] “You’re saying that you wanted me?”
[Isaiah] “Still do.”
That part was so sweet. I hate Skye. How could she keep Isaiah and Xander apart? Who does that?!
“Nash didn’t care that I was eighteen, that I owned the House, that I wasn’t actually his sister, or that I would put up one hell of a fight if he tried to stop me.”
He taught Avery self-defense and then also acted like her brother and making sure she stayed safe, giving Avery advice, telling her not to be so rash in her decisions and just the way he comforted her when she’d be in distress. I LOVE HIM. and not only of that BUT HE SAVED A PUPPY. is there anything not to like about Nash?? Also Libby and Nash are so good together. It’s really funny how he keeps leaving different types of cowboy hats around for her. I wish we’d seen more of him.
“But mostly, I can’t hate him, Avery Kylie Grambs, because he brought me you.”– Jameson
I couldn’t agree more, Jamie. I hate Tobias Hawthorne because he caused so much chaos, but at the same time he’s amazing because he left behind all this clues and the mysteries were so good. How did he guess that Eve would not be a good person? That guy was crazy smart, I’ll give him that.
Also, the chess scene was so tense. I’m so sad about what happened to Toby. He did it on purpose so Avery could escape. It was so sad. And Eve is crazy! How did she not panic when Vincent said that he’d cut a vein if Toby threw the game?
I can’t wait for this new game that Avery’s hosting. It’s going to be taking place in the book coming out in July. The Grandest Game. When Avery says “It starts now” doe she mean she’ll be dropping clues? Ahh! This suspense is killing me! I can’t believe what Avery did after the Countdown that ended her 1 year at Hawthorne House! I would not be able to do that.
“I guess that’s what happens when you take a very risky gamble.”-Jameson
And with that, I leave you, dear readers!
XOXO
