Hello, my lovelies! This is the next book in the One of Us is Lying series, so if you haven’t read my previous review yet, I recommend, you do. You can read it here! I started and finished this book today, and I really liked it! Let’s see what it’s about! Truth or Dare turns deadly. What would you choose?
Come on, Bayview, you know you’ve missed this.
A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up since Simon died, but in the year since the Bayview four were cleared of his shocking death, no one’s been able to fill the gossip void quite like he could. The problem is no one has the facts.
Until now.
This time it’s not an app, though—it’s a game.
Truth or Dare.
Phoebe’s the first target. If you choose not to play, it’s a truth. And hers is nasty.
Then comes Maeve and she should know better—always choose the dare.
But by the time Knox is about to be tagged, things have gotten dangerous. The dares have become deadly, and if Maeve learned anything from Bronwyn last year, it’s that they can’t count on the police for help. Or protection.
Simon’s gone, but someone’s determined to keep his legacy at Bayview High alive. And this time, there’s a whole new set of rules.
The highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestselling thriller everyone is talking about, One of Us Is Lying! There’s a new mystery to solve at Bayview High, and there’s a whole new set of rules.
My Thoughts:
It is a year after the action of One of Us Is Lying, and someone has started playing a game of Truth or Dare. But this is no ordinary Truth or Dare. This game is lethal. Choosing the truth may reveal your darkest secrets, accepting the dare could be dangerous, even deadly. The teenagers of Bayview must work together once again to find the culprit, before it’s too late . . .
The Bayview Four are back! Yay!! I loved them and the fact that they seem like the typical teen stereotypes, but they’re really way more than that. I really did miss Bayview, even though I read One of Us is Lying a day ago. I know it’s weird to enjoy returning to such a toxic and crazy place. But I’m in love with these wicked games. Is that weird? I think it is. I guess I’m a weird person.
It made me so happy to see Nate and Bronwyn together! Even though it’s kinda expected. I mean come on: The bad boy and the over-achiever? Happens in every YA book and movie. I know, I know, I’m a hypocrite. I said they are not their stereotypes. But at first glance, they kinda are.
And thank you, Karen McManus for Luis Santos and Knox Myers. Luis’s a fun guy. Knox is also a great person, but I hate the people who made fun of him. UGH! Why must they be so cruel?
I absolutely adore our leading trio—Maeve, Knox, and Phoebe—they each shine brightly in their own unique ways. The differences in their personalities only serve to enhance the beautiful bond they share. However, it’s Knox who truly captured my heart and attention. His sweetness, hidden courage, intelligence, and subtly self-deprecating humor, which he may not even realize he possesses, make him stand out for me. What I admire most about this series is how we witness the personal struggles and growth of the main characters alongside the central mystery. The way these three characters depict the evolution of their friendship, overcoming obstacles and reuniting just when things start to get challenging, is portrayed so marvelously. Their journey is truly captivating!
At first, I was all smug with my detective skills. But then, bam! The big reveal in the final chapter hit me like a ton of bricks. In just a few pages, I went from “I got this” to “I got nothing!” Those clues were waving at me the whole time, even popping up in Knox’s gaming nostalgia, and yet I missed them all. But you know what? I kinda love it! It just proves that this book still has some tricks up its sleeve. I mean, who doesn’t love a good ol’ plot twist in a murder mystery, right?
And, there’s no denying it: Brandon’s actions warranted consequences. It’s a harsh truth, but a necessary one. His bullying led to the tragic loss of Phoebe’s father, and his insensitive behavior towards her secret was inexcusable. He failed to support her when she needed it the most, and instead, added to her pain. My stance on this remains unwavering.
Phoebe may not be the best character, but some may argue she's not the worst, although her actions towards her sister were questionable. Emma may not have deserved it, but she may not have been entirely innocent either. You'll understand once you read the book.
Maeve! I adore you! As Bronwyn’s sister, I cherished her deeply. I was filled with fear when Maeve believed she was relapsing, as I couldn’t bear the thought of losing my favorite character (apart from Bronwyn, perhaps) to leukemia. She’s incredibly intelligent, despite not attending school for a couple of years.
The climax! UnbelievableUnbelievableUnbelievableUnbelievable! We had the killer all figured out. Then, out of nowhere, came a mind-blowing plot twist in the final chapter. I kid you not. This twist unfolded in the very last 2 or 3 pages. It caught me completely off guard!
Oh my gods, look at the time! It’s Detective Aaradhyaa’s break time. As the assistant detective, it’s your turn to take charge of the case. With the suspects identified, it’s time to reveal the true identity of the copycat. On your marks. Get set. Go.
XOXO
