Hey guys, guess who’s back with the third instalment of the Twilight Saga – Eclipse! I couldn’t wait to dig into this book and share my thoughts with you. Brace yourselves because this one might just make you rethink your loyalties to Team Edward or Team Jacob. But don’t worry, I’ll reveal where I stand by the end of this review. So, let’s dive right in, shall we?
Ahem *Deep movie trailer voice, please!*
In this novel, following their reunion at the conclusion of the previous installment (who’s review you’ll find here), Edward and Bella anticipate their imminent high school graduation and Bella eagerly awaits the time when she will attain immortality, mirroring Edward’s nature. However, Bella’s former adversary, Victoria, resurfaces with a fresh scheme to exact revenge for her lover, James’ demise by eliminating Bella. This dire situation compels Edward, Bella, and the entire Cullen family to forge an unlikely alliance with their newly-minted adversaries, the Quileute werewolves. “Eclipse” is a captivating blend of suspense and romance, leaving adolescent readers on the edge of their seats, eager to discover what fate awaits Bella and Edward.
*normal voice*
Bella hasn’t been talking to her friend, Jacob, ever since he ratted her out to her dad for riding the bike he helped her fix. But after a while, Bella’s dad actually wants her to hang out with Jacob more than her boyfriend, Edward. So he decides to unground her on one condition – she’s gotta promise to spend some of her free time with Jacob. Bella’s like, fine, whatever. She, reluctantly, agrees to it.
As Bella and her friends embrace their senior year of high school, Bella eagerly anticipates the day when she will join Edward as a vampire. She’s worried that she’ll grow older and older than Edward. Edward, on the other hand, firmly believes that Bella needs more time before embracing her immortal destiny. Until then, he lovingly insists that Bella agrees to be his wife before he grants her the gift of immortality.
As per her promise to her dad, Bella decides to start talking to Jacob. He reveals that numerous members of the pack have experienced imprinting, a phenomenon in which werewolves encounter their destined life partners by inexplicable biological design.
Although life in Forks is, like, super boring for Bella, she and her chosen family, the Cullens, are keeping tabs on a bunch of brutal murders going down in Seattle. Turns out, these murders are being committed by newborn vampires. The Cullens hope the Volturi, the vampire royalty, will step in and handle it, but nope, they don’t care about stopping the killing spree before loads of innocent humans end up dead. So, the Cullens are like, alright, we gotta do something about this ourselves. The only problem is, they’re having a tough time finding another crew of vampires to help them out. But hey, guess who comes to the rescue? Jacob and his pack of werewolves! Jacob realizes that these new vampires somehow pose a threat to Bella, so his pack and the Cullens team up to put an end to this whole mess.
As Bella, Jacob, and Edward are just hanging out, waiting for the army of newborns to show up, they get a chance to talk about Jacob’s feelings for Bella. Bella starts to realize how her love for Edward has made him feel and starts feeling all guilty about it. Later, when Victoria comes and tries to ruin their day (and life), Edward steps in and kills her, putting an end to the drama. But it’s not over yet! Bella still has to deal with Jacob and his feelings. She tells Jacob that she loves him, but that she can’t live without Edward. So, in the end, Bella chooses Edward, leaving poor Jacob heartbroken. Oh, and guess what? Bella finally agrees to marry Edward so she can become a vampire.
Oh my goodness, this ending is absolutely infuriating! Stephanie Meyers, how could you possibly do this to me? How could you break Jacob’s pure, loving heart in such a heartless way? Seriously, I just cannot even comprehend it. Jacob is such an incredible guy, and he deserves so much better. And can we talk about how he runs away when he hears the “good news”? Like, seriously? Ugh, it’s just too much to handle. So, Bella is Edward’s fiancĆ©e, now.
I really hope Bella’s parents come to their senses and put an end to this madness. I mean, why on earth can’t Edward and Bella just wait a little bit longer? Edward is practically ancient, and Bella is just 18 years old. They could have waited a few more years before diving into the whole vampire thing, right? It’s just so frustrating to think about.
I apologize for going on a small rant there, but this is just my honest opinion. I have to admit, I’m still holding out a glimmer of hope that maybe the movie does things differently. Maybe they won’t get married? I know it might be wishful thinking, but a part of me just can’t let go of that hope. I will forever stand with Team Jacob! Only time (and the next book) will tell if my loyalty is temporary or not. Oh, and please, let me know your thoughts in the comments! Have you switched sides, or are you just as loyal as I am?
Well, rant aside, I should probably get going and start diving into the next book. Farewell for now!
BTW, the poster for the movie is supposedly “ok”. It conveniently avoids revealing whether Bella ends up choosing Edward or Jacob in the movie. sigh So apparently, the whole purpose of the poster is to keep us in suspense and prevent any spoilers. How convenient. Well, I guess we’ll have to wait. Hmmm, Edward’s eyes do look interesting with the amber and all. Maybe that’s why Bella like him. But eyes are no excuse. Till next time, guys!
