The ending of “Merlin”: Is it really bad?

Hey guys! Long time no see! Schools started and I’ve been busy. But now we have a long weekend (Happy Rosh Hashanah to people celebrating it!) and I have time to write. So for the past few weeks I’ve been watching a BBC show called Merlin. And I fell in love with it in, like, 5 minutes! Let me explain what it’s about.

A twist on the Arthurian legend which brings Merlin (Colin Morgan) back as a young boy who acts as servant to Prince Arthur (Bradley James). The warlock must come to terms with his destiny to protect the Prince from harm, all the while being at risk of being exposed as a sorceror. Arthur and Merlin experience many dangerous adventures, and with the help of close friends, fight off threats to the kingdom and build a brother-like bond.

So yeah I loved it. I loved Colin Morgan and Bradley James. They really played Merlin and Arthur really well. But let’s talk about the ending of season 5.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

That ending was so unbelievably sad. Like, I honestly started crying. And there’s no season 6!! So I am now in a movie/show slump so I’m open to suggestions.

The series ends with:

  1. Arthur dying (😭😭😭😭)
  2. The dragon stating that when Albion’s need is greatest Arthur will rise again
  3. Cue Merlin’s (and my) mental breakdown
  4. Gwen being crowned queen (She was only the queen consort before)
  5. We are introduced to a modern setting signified by a blue truck driving past an old Merlin.
  6. Old Merlin walking down the path right alongside the Avalon lake where he pauses with a slight acknowledgement and walks ahead.

Using the aforementioned events we are to assume:

  1. Arthur has not risen.
  2. The reason he has not risen is that:

a) Albion has not faced a threat significant enough for arthur to rise

or

b) The dragon lied and arthur will not rise again.

Which option do you agree with ?

Personally I think that Albion hasn’t faced a significant threat. Because why would Kilgharrah lie? But honestly I can see why people hated the ending. It was a tad bit rushed for them. And I guess it was. But I loved the ending. A Lot.

The ending of Merlin is a really good ending. It was surprising and unexpected but also good. I loved how Merlin told Arthur he was a sorcerer and the episode just focused on Arthur accepting the fact Merlin is a sorcerer and then his death was well done and the scene with the dragon. I have watched the show a million times. Best ending I have ever seen. I also loved the time skip to Merlin walking past the lake in modern world. That was amazing. But at the end I feel so heart broken because over 5 seasons I’ve fallen in love with both Merlin and Arthur. They’re amazing. Merlin has really grown much wiser. Arthur has went from a prat to a wise king. But Arthur is the Once and Future King. He has to return. I wish they would make a new show just about that.

After Arthur died, I feel like Gwen was heartbroken. But Merlin? He was Heartbroken with a capital H. But when Merlin started crying as Arthur boat floated off…? It was like a knife to my heart. I cannot have my boy crying! I will not allow it! I loved the overall concept of Merthur. I loved the banter and everything. How they act like the other is incredible annoying but really they have an incredibly deep unspoken bond (I would give anything to have a true friend like Arthur: a bit of a prat but wise at end). I think Gwen noticed that. So at the end of the show, I always go back to the very first episode. Just to see them young and innocent.

Anyways, there’s my rant/fangirling. I hope you guys had fun and I’ve you’ve watched it let me know what you thought about it! Byeee!

KILGHARRAH: Though no man, no matter how great, can know his destiny, some lives have been foretold, Merlin…Arthur is not just a King-he is the Once and Future King. Take heart, for when Albion’s need is greatest, Arthur will rise again. It has been a privilege to have known you, young warlock. The story we have been a part of will live long in the minds of men.

XOXO

  1. Such a stupid take. Is this the only show you’ve watched in your entire life? Liking such a unfulfilling, rushed, poorly written ending is laughable, get help.
